WD Purple 2TB is a surveillance hard drive for compatible DVR and NVR systems. The listed WD23PURZ model provides internal SATA storage for continuous CCTV recording in a home, shop, office or other security installation.

WD Purple 2TB specifications

Match the WD23PURZ model before ordering

The WD Purple family contains several capacities and model codes. Match the supplied label to WD23PURZ rather than treating every 2TB Purple drive as identical. The linked model-specific datasheet lists CMR recording, a 64MB cache and support for storage systems with up to eight drive bays.

AllFrame firmware is intended for surveillance recording workloads. It does not increase the recorder’s camera-channel limit or make every camera format compatible. Check both the recorder specification and the exact drive model before expanding an existing system.

Estimate WD Purple 2TB recording time

Start with the combined bitrate of every camera being recorded. Include audio and allow for recorder overhead. A motion-based schedule may use less space than continuous recording, but the result depends on activity in the actual scene. Choose settings around the image detail that needs to be retained.

For example, four cameras recording continuously at 2 Mbps each create an 8 Mbps video stream. That equals about 86.4GB per day in decimal units, before audio and overhead. A nominal 2TB disk represents roughly twenty-three days at that assumed rate before formatting and recorder reserves. This example is a calculation, not a guaranteed retention period.

Install and test the WD Purple 2TB drive

Before fitting WD Purple 2TB, confirm that the recorder supports a 3.5-inch SATA disk and the 2TB capacity. Export any existing footage that must be kept before replacing an old drive. Shut down and disconnect equipment as directed by the recorder manual before opening the case.

Secure the drive using appropriate screws, then connect SATA data and power firmly. Keep cables clear of fans and do not block ventilation. Follow the recorder’s supported disk-initialisation process. Check storage status, start recording and play back a sample from each required channel before considering installation complete.

Monitor footage and protect important clips

With WD Purple 2TB in service, review storage-error alerts and overwrite settings periodically. Check actual playback rather than relying only on a live camera picture. Footage needed for an incident should be exported promptly to a separate location. A single recording disk is not an independent backup of its own footage.

Frequently asked questions

How many days can a 2TB drive record?

There is no fixed retention period. Calculate from the cameras’ combined recording bitrate and schedule, then check actual storage use after installation.

Is this an external USB hard drive?

No. It is an internal 3.5-inch SATA drive that needs a compatible recorder or other suitable host and power connection.

What warranty applies to the listing?

The existing listing states a two-year seller warranty. Manufacturer coverage and eligibility are separate; confirm the applicable local terms and supplied serial number.
